When it comes to skin ailments, some may be more damaging than others physically, but also emotionally.
While acne, spider veins, and hair loss may not be as physically painful, the emotional toll these take on a person can have lasting effects.
The same is true with the topic of this conversation: psoriasis.
Let’s learn a little more about what psoriasis is–and equally as importantly, what it isn’t—from our very own Dr. Marianne Rosen.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin condition that presents with red, flaky patches that can often be itchy and uncomfortable, most commonly found on the scalp, knees, elbows, and trunk of the body.

Is it contagious?
No, psoriasis is not contagious.
Dr. Rosen explains, “One of the most important things to educate people on is that psoriasis is not contagious. It is not possible to catch psoriasis from someone else. Patients with psoriasis often suffer needlessly because people assume this.”
What does it look like?
While psoriasis can appear differently for different people, generally, it will look like dry, red patches on the skin.
Usually, these patches are most apparent near the knees, elbows, scalp, and trunk area.
How is psoriasis treated?
The very first thing anyone should do to treat psoriasis is see a trained dermatologist who can accurately diagnose the disease.
“The field of dermatology has made substantial advancements in treatments for the disease, and we can now manage it better than ever,” Dr. Rosen continues, “This includes biologics which can help treat not only the skin element of psoriasis, but some of the internal aspects of the disease as well.”
For psoriasis treatment options, there are a few options:
