November is National Healthy Skin Month! While we celebrate healthy skin all year long, this month is a perfect time to zoom in and focus on the ways in which you can start to get your skin in a healthier place!
1. Get a skin cancer screening at least once a year
There is nothing that will help you maintain healthy skin than getting a skin cancer screening. We know how dangerous skin cancer can be—especially if not detected early.
Skin cancer can develop on any person, no matter your skin’s exposure to the sun, skin color, or how much you use sunscreen. That’s why, in addition to practicing sun safety, it’s vital to have your skin checked for growths you wouldn’t be able to recognize yourself.
We always recommend our patients get a skin cancer screening at least once a year.
2. Manage any acute or chronic skin conditions
It’s time to take a look at that rash you’ve been ignoring for a while or that wart that’s becoming increasingly annoying. Some seemingly harmless conditions could be chronic, and even signs of something more going on.
Because your skin is the outermost layer protecting you from outside harm, it deserves the same care as a recurring or chronic sore throat, for example. Visit a dermatologist to get it sorted and you’ll be on your way to healthier skin!
3. Be Sun Smart (even in winter)
The sun doesn’t disappear just because the weather grows colder. In fact, you can still get sunburned in the winter. Have you ever seen skiers who forgot to lather on sunscreen before a day of hitting the slopes?
We often forget this, but sunscreen is just as important during the winter as during the summer months. Any time you’ll be out in the sun is a good time to wear sunscreen and practice sun safety.
In addition to that, it’s also a good idea to make sure your skincare routine is optimal for winter as a whole.
4. Follow a quality skin care regimen
Ultimately, the things you’re doing every day to promote healthy skin is what will make the difference. Without a regimen, you may find your skin lacks a consistent healthy appearance and feel.
At The Derm, we have our very own line of clinical grade skincare, Derma Made. Derma Made offers high quality, affordable products created by us to customize the ideal regimen for each unique patient.
A quality skin care regimen also includes taking care of your skin your first barrier against the environment – especially the cold chicago winters! Try the ceramide barrier cream from our office or see a dermatologist to come up with a skin care regimen that best suits you”
Visit one of our dermatologists to help understand your own skin’s needs in order to craft a regimen that works to fulfil your skin’s highest potential.
5. Invest in skin health
Every now and then, it makes sense for your skin to get a boost from something a little extra than your everyday routine. Just like you enjoy getting a massage to soothe muscles, a special skin treatment can do wonders to reset your skin and freshen it up—not to mention specific treatments to help reduce acne scars, help with skin texture, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
A specific example of this is chemical peels.
“Chemical peels are a great way of treating many skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, sun spots, sun damage, and scarring. They can also be used to provide rejuvenation. They can be superficial or deep, depending on what is needed to effectively treat the patient’s skin concern.”
This month is a perfect time to celebrate healthy skin, but the real impact of having happy, healthy skin are the ways in which you take care of it every day throughout the year. Book a consultation with a dermatologist today to learn more about how you can work on making yours healthier today!
